Rio de Janeiro November 14, 2012 - The first business portal for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics was announced on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro. The portal, www.portalnegociosrio.com, is the result of an initiative developed by the State Department of Economic Development, Energy, Industry and Services of Rio de Janeiro, in partnership with World Sports & Business (WSB) and Rio Business. Also participating in the creation of the portal were Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) and the Institute of Economics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
The portal seeks to stimulate the sale of products and services indirectly linked to major sporting events. With the entire world's attention focused on Rio de Janeiro and Brazil for these two events, the impact on the economy will reach far beyond sports venues and souvenirs. Among the sectors targeted by WSB are construction, information technology, wood and furniture, textiles and clothing, tourism and associated production and services, retail sales, agribusiness, and the entertainment industry. The ripple effects throughout the economy will be felt for years to come, and the portal will facilitate both domestic and international growth and partnership opportunities.
"We have included demands for paper towels to hospitals in São Paulo, equipment for the expansion of power substations of Paraná Copel, buying furniture and electronics in Pernambuco, and transport services and furniture storage in Rio. Additionally, there will be potential contracts with companies such as builders and hotel groups," said Hélio Viana, president of WSB.
According to estimates made by the Ministry of Sports, the World Cup and the Olympics will generate an increase of 0.4% per year in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), generating revenues of up to U$183 billion by 2019. Since the portal's debut, demands for U$1.783 billion in contracts in Rio and the other World Cup host cities have been identified. The project was inspired by a similar development for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, which led to nearly $ 7 billion in contracts.
"This is a quick way to enter the Brazilian market for many foreign entities with expertise for decades in providing products and services for such events in various economic sectors that will be in demand," said the Secretary for Economic Development, Julio Bueno.
Companies will enter the portal using their CNPJ (an identification number issued by the Brazilian Ministry of Revenue), and be registered with the WSB system. WSB will offer economic and legal advice to companies who wish to offer their products in this market, but do not have access to these sectors.
